SIQUIJOR, philippines
Magical island of fire and enchantment
The remote island of Siquijor is unique among all other islands of the Philippines. Yes, the topography of Siquijor may be similar with the other islands. Its reputation, though, stands out. It is widely known since ancient times as a stronghold for witchcraft, magic, and folk healing.
Known as the Mystic Island of Central Visayas, Siquijor is the smallest of the four provinces of Central Visayas. Siquijor is the southernmost island in the Visayas Group of Islands. It is around 30 kilometers southeast of Negros Island and about 50 kilometers from the closest point of northwestern Mindanao. Siquijor is composed of six municipalities namely Enrique Villanueva, Larena, Lazi, Maria, San Juan, and Siquijor – all located on the narrow flood plains and deltas around the coast. The interior portion of the island is either hilly or mountainous, rising to a central peak is Mount Bandilaan at 557 meters above sea level.
Discovered by Esteban Rodriguez and Juan Aguirre of the Legazpi Expedition in 1565, it was known to the Spanish conquistadors as Isla del Fuego or Island of Fire. Story has it that the Spaniards were mesmerized by thousands of flickering lights that enveloped the island’s shoreline. The sailors might have thought the island was ablaze with mystical fire but in reality, the light was emanating from fireflies swarming the foliage of Molave trees.
Siquijor may be small in size, but the island province is huge on adventure. It is a haven for divers, hikers, bikers, adrenaline junkies, and nature lovers. White sandy beaches cover the 102 kilometers of shoreline surrounding the island while mangroves and marine sanctuaries are aplenty, providing a safe haven for its pristine marine life. Siquijor’s crown jewel, however, is Cambugahay Falls and is the island’s most sought after natural attraction.
Siquijor has a notorious reputation for Barang or sorcery and Kulam or witchcraft. While this may be true, the island is also home to Mananambal who channel the healing powers of rituals, prayers, and herbal medicine to do good. Centuries old tradition of concocting potions and folk healing are still being practiced to this day and used as alternative medicine. Every year, folk healers would gather at Mount Bandilaan to “renew” their connection with nature and put together fresh brews of potions. People from all corners come in search of healing from negative energies brought by pride, envy, and hatred, and expel sickness and evil spells, or to attract love and food fortune.

We begin with a visit to Pitogo Cliff, a stunning natural site offering jaw-dropping views of tall cliffs and smashing waves. Dare to descend to the lower level and take the most Instaworthy snapshot. We continue to the Century Old Balete Tree & Fish Spa. Care for a fish pedicure? Flip-flops off, soak your trotters into the pool, and try your best not to get tickled by them hungry fishes feeding on your dead skin. The next destination puts a playful spin on Siquijor’s reputation for sorcery and witchcraft. Here at Hapitanan Broomshot, you simply grab a broomstick, jump high, and vibe like a flying witch. Up, up, and away! We then venture to the heart of Lazi and make our way to Lazi Church and its adjacent convent-turned-museum. The striking stone church was declared a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines in 2001, and a National Historical Landmark by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines in 1984. Ready for your most awesome time on the island? Cambugahay Falls – with its rope swings, bamboo rafts, and three levels of waterfalls fun – is the most sought after natural attraction on the island. Pluck up for unlimited water play and scream “H2 OH WOW!” Afterwards we navigate to Salagdoong Beach. Alluring beach to relax on… Check! Sumptuous beachfront lunch to devour… Check! Two thrilling diving boards to conquer… Check! You’re in for a treat! Then we bounce to Saint Francis of Assisi Church (Siquijor Church) before heading to Paliton Beach for the most magical sunset views on the island. After the tour, transfer back to your hotel. DAY 3 (BD) SIQUIJOR
Breakfast at the hotel then enjoy your free time. In the afternoon, prepare yourself for a half day tour that offers a sneak peek into the mystic tales & witchcraft legends surrounding Siquijor, allowing you to experience firsthand the magical folk traditions the island is known for. We begin with a visit to Balay Pahauli (House of Restoration) where you can experience traditional healing which has been passed on from generation to generation. Herbal medicines, amulets, love potions, and Tuob (Fumigation) – a ritual which uses ashes obtained only during Black Saturday combined with a concoction of herbs – are used to remove attached negative energies brought by pride, envy, and hatred, and expel sickness and evil spells. Take the wellness experience to the next level by getting an optional Siquijor Traditional Massage or Hilot. Afterwards get ready for Bolo-Bolo – a healing ritual which uses a special black stone, a glass of water, and a bamboo straw. By blowing air through the straw into the glass of water where the special stone is immersed while reciting silent prayers, the healer can extract diseases and evil spells which manifests through impurities like bubbles, grains, or small rocks in the glass. The healer will continue the process of running the glass of water around your body until the water runs clear, a sign that you have been cured or purified. It’s interesting to note that the practice of Bolo-Bolo came about due to a lack of hospitals on the island. Meeting Siquijor’s healers and trying the age-old healing traditions is a unique experience that immerses you in the mysteries of the island. Whether you're in search of healing or simply curious to explore local traditions, the experience offers a fascinating insight into Siquijor’s enchanting world of witchcraft, magic, and folk healing. After dinner, transfer back to your hotel. Overnight Siquijor
