ILOILO, philippines
Where the past is always present
Iloilo is a province in the Philippines, centrally located in the heart of the archipelago. The capital city of the province is the vibrant City of Iloilo, one of the major urban centers in the country.
Iloilo has always been an important international trading post, and this brought its people immense wealth. Merchants from China and India have long traded with the Ilonggos even before the Spaniards came, as evidenced by numerous artifacts proudly displayed in its museums and private galleries. The Port of Iloilo reopened to the world market by royal order of Queen Isabella II of Spain, and facilitated the export of sugar and fertilizer globally. It was the only deep water port for both Iloilo and Bacolod, capital of Negros Occidental which lays 45 kilometers (28 miles) away across the Guimaras Strait. Therefore, nearly all the trade in sugar and rice from Negros was shipped through Iloilo in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This brought prosperity to Iloilo, and the city became the biggest center of commerce and trade in the Visayas and Mindanao, second only to Manila. Because of this dominance in the region, it was given the name “The Queen City of the South,” a title which it later relinquished to Cebu City.
Grand historical houses are abound in the city, providing a glimpse into the lifestyle of rich Ilonggo families from as far as two centuries ago. There’s the striking Molo Mansion with its high ceilings, Neoclassical balustrades, and lovely decorative carvings. There’s also Casa Mariquit, a centuries-old, solar-powered ancestral home which exhibits photos of meetings with Emperor Hirohito, Chiang Kai-shek, Generalissimo Franco, Former US President Lyndon Johnson, and Pope John Paul II, to name a few.
Iloilo is also home to the Philippines’ first ever liquor museum – Brandy Museum by Emperador Inc. honors the treasured history of producing Spanish brandy, a tradition that dates back to 711 AD.
Iloilo’s countryside showcases stunning sites like the UNESCO World Heritage Site Miagao Church, a Baroque Church built in 1787 with massive stone blocks. GarinFarm Pilgrimage Resort is a sanctuary that integrates agriculture, leisure, and spirituality. Islas de Gigantes is a popular island hopping destination that features divine white sand beaches, hidden lagoons, a sandbar, and islands believed to be once inhabited by giants. A short boat ride away from Iloilo City is the island of Guimaras – home to the world’s sweetest mangoes.
The people of Iloilo are called Ilonggos and they form one of the major ethnic groups of the Philippines. Ilonggos are known to be “malambing,” which roughly translates to “sweet” and “charming.” This trait is particularly apparent with the almost musical intonation of their dialect, Hiligaynon. To non-speakers, Hiligaynon sounds like chanting a love poem or crooning a love song, making it a challenge to discern if an Ilonggo is angry or not.
The streets of Iloilo City come to life during the annual Dinagyang Festival – a captivating event highlighting the rich cultural heritage and unwavering spirit of the Ilonggo people. Thousands of performers adorned in ethnic costumes take part in street performances and compete in a showdown of energetic dance choreographies and powerful drumbeats. During Dinagyang Festival, towering speakers in many parts of the city blast the loudest bass-laden dance tracks and absolutely everyone is welcome to join the dance party.
As with any trip, don’t forget the food. And, thank goodness, the food in this UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy is nothing short of amazing. Abundant (And affordable!) seafood. The glutinous rice cake Baye-Baye. Darag Chicken. The Ilonggo pork stew KBL. Then there’s the über-delicious Ilonggo noodle soup La Paz Batchoy, the Philippines' answer to Japan’s Ramen. Namit gid!
With its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, centuries-old churches, heritage structures, pristine beaches, colorful festivals, and sumptuous cuisines, Iloilo will surely enthrall.
Visit Iloilo, where the past is always present.

DAY 1 ARRIVE ILOILO
Mabuhay, welcome to Iloilo! Meet & greet at Iloilo International Airport (Airport code ILO) then transfer to the hotel. Free time or book an optional tour with us. Overnight Iloilo
DAY 2 (BL) ILOILO
Breakfast at the hotel then brace yourself for a delightful overload of old-world glamour and modern allures as we tour Iloilo, a province and city where the past and present meet. Buckle up and get ready to explore Iloilo, “The City of Love,” and its neighboring province with the same name… Visit Spanish colonial mansions, meditate in a UNESCO World Heritage Site church, hear never to be forgotten stories from bygone eras, check out the city’s vibrant CBD, and feast on widely celebrated, über-delicious local eats. We begin with a leisurely drive to the countryside to San Joaquin. Our destination: GarinFarm Pilgrimage Resort – a sanctuary that integrates agriculture, leisure, and spirituality. Prepare to climb The Hill’s 456 steps, passing through nine Biblical scenes, and be rewarded with a glorious view of a giant cross surrounded by trumpeting angels. It’s heaven on Earth! Afterwards, we bounce to Miagao Church. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Miagao Church is a Baroque Church built in 1787 with massive stone blocks. With its striking façade featuring an elaborate bas-relief with mixes of medieval Spanish, Chinese, Muslim, and local elements in a distinctive yellow ochre color, Miagao Church is truly a sight to behold! We drive back to the city and navigate to La Paz Market for a taste of the OG (That’s Original Gangsta!) Ilonggo noodle soup – La Paz Batchoy. Netong's La Paz Batchoy originated in the district of La Paz in the late 1930s and is, in our humble opinion, the Philippines' answer to Japan’s Ramen. Go ahead and finish a bowl and don’t be shy to ask for a free refill! After lunch we make our way to one of the oldest houses in Iloilo – Casa Mariquit, which has been around for over 200 years. A well-maintained ancient abode made of bricks and wood (It may be old, but it’s powered by solar energy!), Casa Mariquit transports you back in time and gives a glimpse into the lifestyle of rich Ilonggo families of more than two centuries ago. Make sure to check out the photos of meetings with Emperor Hirohito, Chiang Kai-shek, Generalissimo Franco, Former US President Lyndon Johnson, Pope John Paul II, and many others proudly displayed inside the house. We also visit the Old Iloilo Provincial Jail, a 100-year-old penitentiary converted into a national museum. Another museum not to be missed is Museo Iloilo. Designed by Ilonggo architect Sergio Peñasales, Museo Iloilo houses an impressive collection of cultural heritage of Iloilo and Panay including Stone Age native pottery, fossils, jewelry, burial jars, Chinese pottery, Annam- and Siam-era photos, war relics, remnants of a sunken British trade ship, Spanish-era Filipino sculpture, and modern art made by Ilonggo artists and craftsmen. We visit more historical gems like Molo Church, Molo Mansion, and Jaro Metropolitan Cathedral & Belfry then we check out the city progressive quarter. We traverse Iloilo Business Park, Megaworld's acclaimed 72-hectare township and make a photo stop at Iloilo Convention Center then proceed to Festive Walk Iloilo. Ready for an immersive liquor experience? We check out the Philippines’ first ever brandy museum. Spanish brandy is one of those few drinks that many Filipinos can easily associate with some of their happiest, most special memories. Brandy Museum by Emperador Inc. honors the treasured history of producing Spanish brandy, a tradition that dates back to 711 AD. Step into the museum and be transported into a Spanish bodega with historical artifacts. Take part in a brandy tasting class. (Easy on the drinks, Stallion!) After the tour, you’ll have a newfound appreciation for one of the Philippines’ most beloved liquors. We do a rolling tour of Guimbal Vanishing Mansion, Iloilo River Esplanade, Iloilo Provincial Capitol then do pasalubong shopping at the Original Biscocho Haus. Classic Butterscotch – Add to Cart! After the tour, transfer back to your hotel. Overnight Iloilo
DAY 3 (B) ILOILO-DEPARTURE
